the serious moonlight

Ok so you know those mcdonald’s halloween pails? The ones that they are saying might be back this year? I just saw a news story about the rumor and reminded me of this. A few years ago, my mom was cleaning out the entry way closet – they don’t really use the front door/entry way so that closet tends to be a black hole. So she was cleaning out and in the very back of the top shelf she found one of those mcdonald’s halloween pails. Full of dog food.

No clue. So weird.

Anyway I lead with that because once again I don’t have much to post today.

Sewing-wise, I did do a few things. I got everything from dragoncon put away. WOW! I also did a couple of small things to the Padme packing gown vest — if you saw my post-dragoncon costume recap, you’ll know that I mentioned the side seam on the right side had a weird burble in it.

You can see it here, right above the armband on my arm furthest from the camera. I don’t remember noticing this every in try-ons at home and I assumed this was from the vest riding up after wearing it for a while – but when I threw it on at home this week, it was right there plain as day, no riding up. Thankfully the culprit was an easy fix – it was the front facing layer on that side – the very last thing I did on this was to whip-stitch it down over the side seam on the inside. I had apparently gotten it slightly too tight right there. As soon as I cut away those stitches it relaxed out.

I did also put boning in the side seams of the vest. Like I said, I’d already prepared it for boning and then decided it didn’t need it. So I threw some in the side seams. We’ll see how that goes next time I wear it.

Kinda thinking about wearing it for MCX this weekend but I’d have to also figure out the fix for the biggest issue – keeping the armbands in place. I’ll talk more about MCX later in the post.

I’ve gotten 2 out of 3 of my swatches for wedding Leia. So far nothing is right. So I haven’t been able to do a damn thing even though I’m mentally ready to go. Originally this project was supposed to be “I’ll l just run to Joann to get ‘close enough’ stuff, it’ll be a quick project” and it’s quickly turning into not that because I can’t find the colours I have in mind. I did go by Joann Saturday to just scope it out, and everything that they have in the green family is… like a dull muted green? Like no spring greens, no pale greens, nothing, all just this… dull green. I have this very specific “seafoam” green in my mind and nothing there or in my swatches is even close so I guess we’re going to be dyeing…everything. I am probably just going to use the silk curtain panels I have left from Eliza for the base and buy plain silk chiffon for the outer layer. Argh.

But Joann wasn’t completely pointless, we did get this little neon pumpkin:

And we got the Haunted Mansion doormat a couple of weeks ago.

Look at how it lights up the entryway:

Speaking of Saturday, what a weird day.

On Saturday was our neighborhood yard sale. Which we forget about EVERY YEAR – we want to participate but it’s right after dragoncon so it’s always one of those “oh shit that’s tomorrow” moments every year. But we got up Saturday and drive around to a few of the yard sales. Then headed to midtown because Chase wanted a juice from the juice bar my cousin works at – and on he way there we had another “oh shit” moment, we realized Cooper Young Fest was happening that day, right where we were headed. I’ve never been, as long as I’ve lived here — don’t know why, I guess just the timing around my birthday weekend and, for the last 2 decades, being after dragoncon. Thankfully the parking craze hadn’t started yet so no issue heading to the juice shop, and then we decided, hey let’s just go check it out? We were able to park about 2 blocks away from the entrance and walked the whole thing. Chase got a pronto pup, we both got some cookies. It was nice but quickly got hot – and I had not worn walking shoes, and I had a blister form about halfway in. So we headed out. Went to Joann and target and then home. Then… back out to the yard sales because they were still going strong. By the time we got home, we were exhausted.

Sunday Chase had us up and at Home Depot early to get rocks for the side flower bed and doing yard work. Totally wore me out. After a nap we went to ikea – something I’d wanted to do saturday but we were too tired – because I need a small drawer storage unit to move my paint and art supplies to. And I didn’t want plastic. Well nothing at ikea worked right which was frustrated. We drove around to a few other places that might have something and no luck.

We did get this little Seafood Food Truck cat scratcher for Luna at one place though, so not totally pointless.

Last thing to chat about, as I was putting costumes away I had hung my Wanda bodice on the door to my sewing room. Came back upstairs late that night and found it like this:

I had noticed one small spot on an edge where the glue wasn’t holding well while wearing it at Dragoncon… but didnt think it was so bad that the entire thing would just fall off like this??? So frustrating. Obviously I can glue it back but, yeah, frustrating. This is why I try to sew everything.

So let’s talk upcoming events and costumes.

Memphis Comic Expo this weekend!
My options… at the moment it looks like its going to be hot. High 80s.
Padme packing gown – like I said above I’d have to fix the armbands and it’d be toasty.
Ceremonial Leia – a cooler option but I’d have to deal with carrying the train all the time. But I haven’t worn it anywhere local and it’s very recognizable.
Bespin Leia – it’s still easily accessible from dragoncon, it’s cool, it has pockets. This might be the winner.
Ms Marvel or Rogue as Ms Marvel – thought about digging out an old superhero fav. Definitely nice and cool but I dunno that I feel like wearing something this revealing, part of me says yes part of me says no LOL

Next is Midtown Con halloween weekend. The spring version of midtown con was very tighted and crowded so I don’t really want to wear anything that drags the ground/wouldn’t be ok being pushed up against things.
Diane – I’d really love to wear Diane because it’s Black Lodge but it’s also not very recognizable at all.
Dr Crusher – I’ve been wanting to rewear it and this might be fun.
Edith – might also be fun since it’s halloween weekend?
Any of my older Leia – if I could get Chase to wear Luke

And then the Japanese Fest in November –
Sailor Jupiter – the new one because I haven’t worn it anywhere!
Utena – it’s a maybe, it’s prob going to be Jupiter – unless it’s just way too cold, it’s outdoors, utena would be warmer.

And finally today is my last day of being 42. I keep forgetting it’s nearly my birthday. Spending this morning crying off and on over the queen’s funeral procession. Fucking bagpipes man, it never fails to get me.
